District 3011 RC Delhi Mid West and RC Delhi Panchshila Park hosted a Peace Conference to hear Rotarian Dr. Ira Helfand speak on nuclear weapons in New Delhi, India. One hundred fifty Rotarians and guests assembled for a festive dinner and presentation. Dr. Helfand and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War advocate the abolition of nuclear weapons.

ElsaMarie D’Silva of Mumbai began her career as a flight attendant, eventually rising to become vice president of network planning for one of India’s largest airlines. Learning about the fatal 2012 gang rape of a young woman in Delhi, an unusually heinous crime that led to public outrage, led D’Silva to make a dramatic career switch. D’Silva is the founder and CEO of the Red Dot Foundation, which works with nongovernmental organizations in India, Nepal, and Kenya to address street harassment and violence against women. In addition to community workshops, the foundation empowers women to document catcalling, groping, and other incidents through an online crowdmapping platform called Safecity. D’Silva was also a Rotary Peace Fellow at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

Korean Orchestra Uses Music to Keep Peace Hopes Alive

North and South Korea have clashed for seven decades, but now a group of musicians are building peace, one note at a time. The Lindenbaum Festival Orchestra recently performed a concert on the border of North and South Korea in the dangerous Demilitarized Zone. The 100 musicians moved outside for the final song so people across the border could hear the music.

Please join us as we help welcome new refugees to our community by putting together 25 Toiletry Kits, 25 Cleaning Kits, and five Linen Kits. All kits will directly benefit refugees being resettled in our area. Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area Refugee and Immigrant Services program works in partnership with the U.S. State Department to welcome and resettle refugees from around the world, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and West Africa. This is a Rotary-Peace Corps Partnership Project.

Ban Ki-moon, the former UN Secretary General, addressed the latest developments in the North-South Korean negotiations at the Business and Peace Symposium in Seoul, the day before the Winter Paralympics began. A main focus of the event was the presentation of the Global Business & Interfaith Peace Awards, given to CEOs worldwide for their promotion of peace through interfaith knowledge and action. Al Jubitz, co-founder of Rotarian Action Group For Peace, is among the distinguished world business leaders who received a 2018 Global Business & Interfaith Peace Award.
